Some of the most stylish people I know are in their 70s and 80s, and none of them follow trends. What they have in common is a clear sense of what works for them, and the confidence to repeat it.
The short version
- Fit matters more than price or labels.
- Comfortable shoes can still look intentional.
- A signature color, easy layers and one statement piece do most of the work.
1. Fit comes first
Bodies change, and clothes that fit five years ago may not fit now. A good tailor can shorten sleeves, take in a waist and hem trousers for less than the cost of replacing them.
2. Choose shoes that look intentional
Comfort is not optional, but it doesn’t have to look like an afterthought. Leather sneakers, loafers and low block heels work with almost everything.
3. Wear your best color near your face
Find one or two colors that make your skin look bright and wear them in scarves, tops and jackets. A soft navy, warm red or jewel tone often works better than black.
4. Build easy layers
A cardigan, a light jacket or a long vest adds polish and keeps you comfortable as temperatures change from home to restaurant to outdoors.
5. Invest in a few quality basics
Well-made trousers, a crisp shirt and a good coat do more for your wardrobe than a closet full of trend pieces.
6. Add one statement piece
Bold glasses, a striking necklace or a beautiful scarf gives an outfit personality. One is plenty.
7. Make dressing easier
Look for stretch fabrics, pull-on waistbands and easy closures. Style should never make getting dressed a struggle.
The real secret
Wear what makes you feel like yourself. Confidence shows more than any label.
